Maundy Thursday: A Night of Service, Love, and Humanity

Maundy Thursday is a day that comes quietly in the week before Easter, but it carries a powerful message for all of us, whether we attend church or not. It’s a moment to pause, reflect, and remember the deep importance of kindness, humility, and service.

At its heart, Maundy Thursday is about an act of love. It commemorates a moment when Jesus, knowing what was ahead of him, chose not to preach or lead, but to kneel down and wash the feet of his friends. It’s a simple gesture, but one that speaks volumes. In that act, he showed what leadership really looks like, not power, not control, but care. Compassion. A willingness to serve.

This isn’t just a story from the past. It’s an invitation to consider how we live our lives today. When we care for others, when we step out of our comfort zones to support someone else, we are continuing that legacy. Maundy Thursday is a reminder that dignity, love, and service are the foundations of a good life and these values matter to everyone, regardless of background or belief.

At the Minster Church of St Mary the Virgin here in North Petherton, we mark the day not just with words, but with action. As Priest in Charge, I will be washing people’s feet, just as Jesus did. It’s not about grand gestures or religious ritual, it’s about connection. When we take the time to care for someone else in this deeply human way, we break down the barriers that often divide us. It’s an act of humility, and of saying, “I see you. You matter.”

Why does this matter for those outside the church walls? Because service and love aren’t confined to religion, they are universal. In a world that often feels divided or distracted, Maundy Thursday invites us to remember that we are all human, all deserving of kindness. It challenges us to ask: Who can I serve today? Where can I offer help? How can I bring more love into my corner of the world?

You don’t have to be religious to understand the impact of compassion. You don’t have to attend church to recognise the power of humility. And you don’t need any special qualifications to show up for someone else. Maundy Thursday is about being human together, about making space for one another in small, meaningful ways.

Please do come and join us and be a witness, even if you don’t take part.  Whether  you join us in person or not, we invite you to carry the spirit of this day with you. Let it be a moment to pause. To look around. To find someone who needs a hand—and offer yours.

In a world that needs more connection, Maundy Thursday reminds us where to begin: with love, with service, with each other.
