Does Prayer Work? What Is It, Really?
Prayer is not a magic formula or a wish list—it’s a relationship. It’s our way of turning to God, not just with our needs, but with our hopes, doubts, gratitude, and longing. Prayer is at the heart of our spiritual life. Through spoken words, silent reflection, Scripture, or even the beauty of liturgy, prayer becomes a space where we meet God.
But does it work?
If we mean, “Does God always give us what we ask for?”—the answer is sometimes no, at least God doesn’t always answer us the way we want or expect. But if we mean, “Does prayer draw us closer to the God who knows us and loves us?”—then yes, prayer always works. It changes us. It opens us to grace. It reminds us we are never alone, even in silence or struggle.
Prayer may not change every circumstance, but it can change things in ways you might not see and it certainly changes our hearts. And in that transformation, we often find the peace, strength, or clarity we were seeking all along.
